Press Release
PSA’s Portnet.com Provides Customers
with Instant Access to Berthing Schedules via
WAP-Enabled Mobile Equipment
Portnet.com Pte Ltd, a subsidiary of PSA Corporation
Ltd (PSA), has announced a new wireless information
service that provides value for busy shipping
executives on the move. Using WAP(wireless application
protocol)–enabled handphones and other mobile
equipment, such as hand-held personal computers,
shipping executives can now check the berthing
and unberthing schedules of vessels calling at
PSA’s terminals instantly, simply by accessing
PSA’s portnet.com web site at http://www.portnet.com/03products/shippers_1.htm.
This unique service provided by PSA’s Portnet.com
offers customers instant and updated vessel berthing
information with great convenience. Presently,
shipping executives obtain such information by
checking with PSA’s terminals, through the
Internet or by manually sieving the information
from trade publications.
The WAP-enabled berthing schedule is provided
free-of-charge to PSA customers. This has been
developed in line with Portnet.com’s philosophy
of increasing productivity and saving costs for
its customers through the greater use of the Internet.
Other members of the port community also stand
to benefit. For example, shippers who need to
know when the vessels transporting their cargo
will arrive or depart from PSA’s terminals
in Singapore can obtain this information in an
instant through WAP.
Mr Khoo Teng Chye, Group President, PSA Corporation,
said, "Portnet.com was set up by PSA to tap
on the Internet and new telecommunication technologies
to bring about greater convenience and new cost-effective
solutions for our customers. The availability
of berthing schedules of vessels calling at Singapore
on WAP-enabled mobile equipment is a continuation
of our efforts. In carrying on with the PSA tradition,
we have and will continue to listen to our customers’
feedback, and strive to deliver more of such innovative
services for their operations in Singapore."
Portnet.com was launched on 8 May to create more
value through e-commerce solutions for the shipping
community. It builds on PSA’s expertise
in establishing Portnet as the only nationwide
e-commerce community for ports and shipping in
the world today since 1984. Portnet has 6,400
users and 5 million transactions a month.
